Jonathan was the son of John Bush (b. 2 February 1742) and Nancy Elizabeth Walton (possibly Watson). Jonathan was reportedly born in Clark Co, KY but, more likely, Orange Co, VA. He grew up in Clark Co, KY. Several of his Uncles and one Aunt all removed from Orange Co, VA to Clark Co, KY. [Clark County is east of Lexington.]

He married three times:
First, Mary Stevens Rawlings (poss Rollins) (b. 17 April 1785; d. 24 February 1814 at Clark Co, KY) Issue:
1) Robert R. b. 13 Dec 1803
2) Wyatt b. 28 Dec 1805; d. 15 May 1785 m. Ellen Lehaire)
3) John b. 28 Aug 1809 a bachelor
4) Owen R. (#1) b. 15 July 1810; d. 11 Mar 1811)
5) Nancy W. b. 20 January 1811
6) James S. b. 3 Mar 1812
7) Owen R. (#2) b. 2 January 1814) (Mary probably died from his birth. This naming practice was not uncommon when infant mortality was high.)

Then he married Dianah Emerson (b. 7 February 1791 in Clark Co, KY; d. 5 March 1849) m. 2 June 1814. Issue:
8) Francis A.J. b. 13 February 1815 (married Annie Gibbs)
9) Elizabeth A. W. "Liza Ann" b. 28 March 1817 (married Mr. Clark)
10)William T. b. 24 January 1819 (married Mildred C. Oldham (b. 1 February 1824))

Then he married Ann W. Stewart (b. 24 January 1812; d. 26 February 1853 at Clark Co, KY) married on 28 August 1851. No issue.

Jonathan owned and operated the first stone mill in Clark Co, KY.

A revival in Winchester (Clark Co.), KY was led by Reverend Alexander Campbell during which Jonathan, and several other family members, converted from being Baptist to (Disciples of Christ) Christian.
