Clark was an artist, as were his two brothers Frank and Eugene, focusing on scenic art for theaters. At age 15, he joined his older brother Frank in Streator, Illinois to learn the scenic art business, but soon gave in to the lure of Texas and the Indian Country, going walkabout for two years.

After his return, he was an intinerant painter for several years, possibly with his father as business agent, before joining his two brothers to form the Cox Brothers Scenic Studio in New Orleans around 1890.

By 1901 he had established his own Scenic Studio in Houston. Texas. He lived the rest of his life as an artist in the Dallas/Houston/Galveston area, including building floats and ballroom decorations for the Carnival.

The museum in Carlsbad Caverns Guadalupe Mountains Association has Clark's paintings on display, and an archive of material. They also published a book, "A Brush With Passion," about his life.
