In the late evening hours of Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, after 75 years, John Mathew Lenning was called home by his Lord and Savior and went peacefully into the night surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Deer Lodge July 18, 1935, to John Henry Lenning, the son of an Avon pioneer family, and Thelma Grace Johnson, the daughter of a Wibaux Montana pioneer family. John was raised in the Avon and Deer Lodge area. Graduating from Powell County High School in 1955, he joined the Montana Army National Guard. Employment as a youth included the Montana Power Company, the Andersen Mine and The Milwaukee Railroad. John joined the United States Air Force in 1956. After basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas, he attended a Special Weapons Mechanic School at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colo. In May 1957, he returned home to Montana as a member of the 29th Air Defense Command at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls. He met and married the mother of his children while stationed in Great Falls. His one and only son was born at Malmstrom AFB, John often joked that his son was the best deal he ever got for $7 on base.

After his Air Force service he returned home to Deer Lodge, continuing his service with the AirNational Guard and returning to the railroad where he spent the next 25 years.

His most recent employment at the age of 75 was at the Wal-Mart sporting goods department in Helena. What a sweet job for an avid hunter and fisherman to share seven decades of knowledge. He really enjoyed sharing anything and everything with folks who were interested in knowing his secrets to success, be it fishing, hunting, firearms or any other subject.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Thelma. His second wife Cornelia Lenning .John is survived by his four children: John Lenning, Judy Lenning-Romero, Elly Lenning Anema (Scott), Betty Lou Lenning Petiler; a sister, Jean Skaggs, Kentucky; his very special friend, Barb Ediger of Helena; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces nephews and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home, Butte , Montana Then followed by a gathering of family and friends with a creamation and a private burial taking place at Sunset Memorial Park at a later date. We Laid Dad to rest July 2012
