Ohio Woman Fifth Road Fatallity.
Mrs. Mariah Elizabeth Baker, about, 84, of 408 Pearl Street, Middleport, Ohio, became Mason County's fifth highway fatality of the year when she died 20 minutes after being admitted to Charleston General Hospital last evening following a wreck on Rt. 35, near Grimms Landing about 7 p.m. State Trooper Robert C. Dilley reported.
The woman was fatally injured when two automobiles collided head on after one of the vehicles attempted to pass a truck, the officer said. Six others were injured.
Mrs. Baker was a passenger in a car driven by Eugene Rollins, 25, of 1759 Sugar Creek Dr., Charleston. She was the grandmother of Rollins.
The injured included: Rollins, who suffered possible rib fractures; his wife, Mary, 26, facial lacerations, and bruises; their 14 month old son, Philip, bruises. They also were taken to Charleston General Hospital.
The officer said Rollins attempted to pass a truck driven by Thomas Edward Williams, 33 of Eleanor, and collided with a car driven by Robert S. Fisher, 24, also of Eleanor.
Six persons were riding with Rollins, police said, two were in Fisher's car and eight were in the truck, which was sideswiped bu not damaged seriously.
Mrs. Baker was born in West Virginia the daughter of the late George and Margaret Smith Cossin.
She was preceded in death by a son Ernest who was killed in an auto accident at Harrisonville, Ohio., several years ago.
Survivors included the husband, Charles Henry Baker, who resides in Point Pleasant; two daughters, Mrs. Addie Lee May, Reynoldsburg, Ohio., Mrs. Shella Rollins, Charleston; five sons, Clero M. Baker and George H. Baker, Middleport, the latter agent at the B.&O. station at York near here, Orville Lenard, Cleveland, Ohio., Charles L. Baker and Raymond Baker, Charleston; three brothers; 25 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Among the grandchildren are John and Edson Baker who operate the Baker Furniture store in Middleport.
The family is affillated with the Church of the Nazarene.
The body is a t the Rawlings-Coats Funeral Home in Middleport. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Interment will be in the Gravel Hill Cemetery at Cheshire.
