Longtime Fairbanksan James Arnold Hendrickson, 78, passed away at Denali Center on March 10, 2012. His loving family was at his bedside.
Jim was born in Virginia, Minn., on July 13, 1933, to Stanley A. and Helen P. Hendrickson.
As a teenager, his family moved to Puyallup, Wash., where Jim graduated from Puyallup High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his discharge, he attended gunsmithing school in Denver, and earned his certificate in gunsmithing from the Colorado School of Trades in 1958. While studying in Denver, he met his future wife, Birdie. They married in Thornton, Colo., on June 17, 1959, and later moved to Portland, Ore. Together they raised three daughters, Valerie, Julia and Lisa.
In February of 1964, Jim fulfilled his dream of moving to Alaska when he accepted a job as a gunsmith in Fairbanks. He was employed at Shebal's Gun Shop and Frontier Sporting Goods. He was an excellent craftsman and took great pride in his work. Jim began a second career as a locksmith and retired from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Always an avid outdoorsman, Jim treasured his memories of fishing the pristine lakes of The Last Frontier, moose hunting every fall in the Interior, smoking salmon and tending to his vegetable garden. He was a lifelong member of the NRA.
Jim was a voracious reader and great conversationalist on many topics. His easygoing manner and friendly smile immediately put people at ease. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved telling a good joke. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Helen Hendrickson; his sister, Joanne Raphael, and brothers, Donnie Hendrickson and Gene Hendrickson.
Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Birdie; daughter, Valerie J. Hendrickson and son-in-law Tom Brozoski of Palmer, Alaska; daughter, Julia A. Hendrickson and Rick Johannes of Maricopa, Ariz.; daughter, Lisa M. Curry of Dallas, Texas; grandsons, Jonah A. Curry of Hemet, Calif., Matthew J. Curry of Fairbanks, Anthony R. Curry of Iowa City, Iowa, and his great-grandchildren, Aleesa A. Curry, Autumn M. Curry, and Jonah A. Curry II, all of Hemet, Calif.
He also is survived by his sisters-in-law, Beatrice Aikins and Mary Wood of Las Vegas, and nephew, Larry Hendrickson and family of Portland, Ore.
In keeping with Jim's wishes, no service will be held. At a later date, the family will spread his ashes over his favorite fishing spot in Alaska.
