Birth: Mar. 24, 1858
Death: Jul. 4, 1941

Albert Henry Rowe was born March 24, 1858 at Irish Hollow, Illinois and died on July 4, 1941 at Great Falls, MT. He had been ill only 3 months before he passed away at a local hospital. Several MT newspaper wrote of his death (i.e. "Rowe, Pioneer Montanan, Succumbs to Long Illness" and "Albert H. Rowe, Pioneer of State, Taken by Death").

Albert was the son of James Henry Rowe and Catharine Ivey Rowe. He had 7 siblings: Mary, William, Julia, Wearn, Charlie, Sarah & Cressy.

Albert attended school in IL for 9 years, then worked on farms until he was 20 years old. In 1878, he (along with his family) left IL on a steamer and came to Fort Benton and lived for a time with Albert's uncle on his ranch. Albert soon found employment "carrying mail for the government", often times traveling by horseback. He also worked "driving a stagecoach" (1878-1880). He later worked with his father who owned and operated a mine at Neihart. Later on he served as "a deputy sheriff". He also homesteaded for a few years in Armington and then did some "veterinary work" in the Belt and Armington areas until 1934.

Albert was married twice. His first wife was Ida May Payne, the daughter of Rufus Payne and Mary Eliza Payne. Her parents were also "pioneer Montana people". Albert and Ida had married on July 3, 1883. They had one daughter, Alta Mae. At some point prior to 1900, they divorced, as Ida had remarried Charles Bucknum in May of that year. Albert then married May Watkins. They married in 1906. Three children were born from this union: James, Vera and Cathryn (my husband's mother). According to "family history", May knew nothing of Albert's "first family", but when she found out, she divorced Albert and she and her 2 daughters moved to CA. Son James moved to Washington state and joined the Army.

At the time of Albert's death, he was living in Great Falls with good friends, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Larsen.

*** MT death certificate #16873 states that Albert was cremated on 7 July (3 days after his death). It does not state what happened to his remains however.
