Lester is the gr gr grandson of William Alexander, Rev War Vet, 1752 Virginia - 1851 Kentucky.

LESTER ALEXANDER SR
Lester H. Alexander Sr., 84, died at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born July 31, 1921, in Alton to Richard D. and Lillian Mae (Gunterman) Alexander.
He married the former Beulah Fern Curry on Jan. 24, 1942, in Alton. She died Jan. 18, 1992.
He served as an MMM-2nd class in the U.S. Navy during World War II, participating in the Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Solomon Islands and Marshall Islands campaigns. He was a tool and die developer for Olin Corp. An avid baseball player, he was a catcher primarily for the Water Tower Dads and Alton Zephyr teams. He held the league batting title one season, hitting .687. One of the highlights of his baseball days was meeting and catching for Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who toured the country with the Babe Didrikson All Stars. The exhibition was held on the site of Alton Plaza, just east of the Alton Law Enforcement Center. He was president of the Alton Area Landmarks Association for many years. He was also president of the Alton-Godfrey Democratic Club in the late 1950s and early 1960s, working on the campaigns of Paul Simon, Adlai Stevenson II and John F. Kennedy. He was part of the group instrumental in bringing Kennedy to Alton in October of 1960, holding a rally at Lincoln- Douglas Square. He was also a precinct 22 committeeman in Alton Township for many years.
Survivors include three children and their spouses, Haroldyne and William Fenimore of South Bend, Ind., Lester H. and Nancy Alexander Jr. of Alton and Jeffrey and Tammy Alexander of Brighton; nine grandchildren, William and Jeffrey Fenimore, Michael, Katherine "Beth", Christopher, Emelie, Sarah, Jeffrey Jr. and Abby Alexander; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Alexander; two sisters, Mary Parsh and Elizabeth "Little Sis" Alexander; and two brothers, Richard V. and Charles R. Alexander.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights.
Funeral services will be conducted by James Lampley at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Madison County Association of the Blind.
