He was one of Henry M. Flagler's best friends. He was a great help to him in obtaining the ground for his hotel, and helped him in many other ways. He was one of the leaders and one of the biggest contributors in the building of the present Flagler Hospital. He served on the Flagler Hospital Board for 25 years.
He donated many beautiful gifts to the City of St. Augustine including the statue of Ponce de Leon in Ponce de Leon Circle on the Bay Front and the two handsome lions at the entrance to the Bridge of Lions, the Memorial Pedestal and Flag Staff in Anderson Circle, The Colored Welfare Center on Central Avenue.
