Neva Edith Blackburn, 88, of Council Grove, died at her home Monday evening, August 6, 2012.

Edith was born in Osborne, KS on March 29, 1924, to Benjamin Cleaver and Louella (Russell) Vermillion. During her childhood, her family moved to Nebraska to be near her grandparents, and later moved to Phillipsburg, KS, where she graduated from high school in 1942. After high school, she worked as a telephone switchboard operator, which enabled her to enroll at Fort Hays College in the fall. While in college, she worked on campus along with a job at the telephone office. In October of 1944, Edith married her high school sweetheart, Robert W. Blackburn. She then transferred to Kansas University to be with him, except for the months she stayed home to care for her dying mother. She graduated from Kansas University with a degree in Sociology.

After college, she worked for the Red Cross doing home social work. This job helped put her husband through medical school and post-graduate studies for one year in Phoenix and another year in Albuquerque. Edith and Bob moved to Council Grove in the spring of 1951, and here they raised four daughters.

Edith was active in the Council Grove Methodist Church, P.E.O., TPM Club, Neota Club, Council Grove Country Club, and several bridge groups. Many hours were spent working together at the Riverside Apartments which they managed. She and Robert have enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing through the years. Other interests were gardening, tennis, sailing, and family pets. Edith's favorite times were family gatherings, dancing, and playing cards with friends.

Edith is survived by her husband Dr. Robert Blackburn of the home, and daughters Teresa Nelson and husband Merle of Lindsborg, Linda Cosgrove and husband John, Rhonda Bryant and husband Darrel, and Annette Adams and recently deceased husband Steven, all of Council Grove.

She is survived by sixteen grandchildren, Scott (Carrie) Nelson, Craig (Kara) Nelson, Darren Nelson, Kirk Nelson, Monica (Jay) Simecka, Lucas Cosgrove, Natalie (Jeff) Sowers, Jeremy Cosgrove, Andrea (Jud) Gladin, Jackie (Adam) Lang, Kayla (Luke) Mitchell, Kevin Bryant, Maggie (Lucas) Ziegenhirt, Taylor Adams, Annie Adams, and Sophie Adams.

Great grandchildren include Sophie, Drew, and Cooper Nelson; Lanie, Adria, and Tate Nelson; Creighton and Claudia Simecka; Quinley Sowers; Harper and Neva Gladin; Isaiah, Ashton, and Hadley Lang; and Parker Ziegenhirt.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers, and son-in-law Steven Adams.

A family visitation will be held at the United Methodist Church on Wednesday evening, 5:00 6:30 pm. A memorial service for Edith will be held at the United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 9th at 2:30 pm. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Morris County Hospital Foundation or the Council Grove United Methodist Church, and sent in care of Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, PO Box 273, 137 N. Union, Council Grove, KS.
