The son of James Anderson Armistead and Emily Strong Colley. Served as a Private in Company H ("Walton Tigers"), 42nd Regiment, Georgia (Volunteer) Infantry, Army of Tennessee, Confederate States Army during the War between the States [mustered in March 4, 1862; the 42nd was assembled at Camp McDonald, GA]. He was captured twice: first at Vicksburg in July 1863 and then near Atlanta on August 7, 1864. He was initially received at the military prison in Louisville, KY Aug 15, 1864, then sent to Camp Chase (Union Army Prisoner of War camp), Columbus, Ohio Aug 16 1864 and transferred to Point Lookout (POW camp), Saint Mary's Co, MD Mar 18, 1865.
Following the war, he began working for the railroad. Believe he was married to Clara Perdue (?may be Peters) and had two children - Maude & Claude. He died in a train wreck near Union Point, GA. He was the engineer of the train.
