"Alla Winsor, the popular proprietor and manager of the Marietta wharf-boat, was born in Watertown, Washington county, Ohio March 29, 1852, being a son of Augustus and Estheran (Smith) Winsor, a more extended mention of whom will be found in another place in this work. Our subject was given good educational advantages, and attended the common schools for several years, after which he became a student in the Bartlett academy.

When fourteen years of age he went to Cincinnati and remained there for four years, having held a clerkship in a mercantile house during that time. After spending a year at Sedalia, MO, Mr. Winsor was for two years a resident of New England. For two years thereafter he held the position of attendant in the Athens, Ohio, insane asylum, and later in the asylum at Indianapolis. His next business venture was made as a huckster in his native county, and for the next ten years he was engaged in general merchandising at Heslop, Ohio.

Since 1887, Mr. Winsor has been a resident of Marietta, and is now engaged in the grocery trade and meat business, also owning a livery business and the Marietta wharf-boat.

[Information from his 1911 obituary: "He bought a grocery and meat market, situated at the corner of Third and Green Streets and conducted a livery stable on Third Street. About the same time, Mr. Winsor purchased the Marietta wharf boat, and for several years was the wharfmaster. Selling his interests after some years, he founded the Marietta Transfer Co., but before long sold out his holdings, to enter into partnership with J. H. McConnell in the Marietta Manufacturing Co., in 1891. Since that time, he has devoted all his time to this concern. Since his taking charge of the plant as manager and president of the company, which positions he held at the time and for over 10 years prior to his death, this big industry has forged ahead."]

"Mr. Winsor has been twice married. November 11, 1876 he married Mary E. Hall. She died November 22d, of the following year, and November 15, 1881, Mr. Winsor was united in marriage to Josephine, daughter of Morgan and Lucretia (Bull) Dye, and granddaughter of Samuel Dye, a pioneer of Lawrence township, Washington county, Ohio.

This last union has happily resulted in the birth of four children, viz: Lucy E. [Ethel L. - married Clement E. Watson, moved to Oklahoma], Cosey A. [Anna C. - married Joseph K. Stehle], Walter A. [moved to Point Pleasant,WV with the Marietta Manufacturing Company] and Alla, Jr. [Dewey who lived in Oklahoma as and adult, and Star who lived in Columbus, OH as an adult - were born after this book was published. Alla Dye Winsor was not actually a 'junior' as he did not have a name identical to his father's. He passed away in 1891.]

Mr Winsor is a member of the F.& A.M., I.O.O.F., K or P. and U.R. and is a democrat. He is recognized as one of the most enterprising and progressive business men of Marietta, and has won a reputation for ability and integrity of which any man might justly feel proud."Memorial should be deleted. Two Alla's pictured have their own memorials in Oak Grove Cemetery.
