William Joseph "Bill" Bailey, of Welaka, formerly of Neptune Beach, died in the early hours of Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, after a two-year battle with cancer.
He was 71 years old and was accompanied by his wife and family at the time of his passing. He is originally from Birmingham, Ala.,, and is the son of Gus and Mina Bailey and the brother of Bud, Jack, Mack, Alford and Ralph Bailey and Mary Murdock, Nell Powell, Jessie Smith, Margaret Swann and Francis Waine. He is a veteran of Vietnam and served 33 years in the U.S. Navy. During his long Naval career he held many responsible positions including Command Master Chief of Mayport Naval Base, and retired in Gaeta, Italy, as Command Master Chief of the 6th Fleet. Since his retirement in 1985, he has enjoyed traveling in his motor home and has been active in the Sunshine Chapter of the Special Military Active Retired Travel club (SMART), of which he served as president for two years. He was also a member of FMCA and Good Sam travel group. He was also a member of Fleet Reserve Chapter 290 in Atlantic Beach and Moose Lodge 184 in Pomona Park. He has touched many lives and has been a very positive influence on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His genuine concern and easygoing demeanor will be sorely missed by his family and by the community.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Dolores Jean Bailey.
Survivors are his present wife Elizabeth Moore-Bailey of Welaka; daughters, Pam (Chris) Christian of Hohenwald, Tenn., Lisa (Bill) Waters and Kim Sutton of Nashville, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Katherine (Steve) Schmidtberger of Victoria, Kan.;three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Thursday, Jn. 5, in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home. Interment was held in Beaches Memorial Park of Atlantic Beach immediately following the service. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd 10 Jan 2006.)
