Enoch Eckburg, a highly respected and life-long resident of this community, passed away at St. Anthony Hospital, Rockford, on Friday afternoon, January 24, at 2:20 o'clock, following a month's illness with pneumonia. Mr. Eckburg had been seriously ill at his home south of town since Christmas, and was taken to the hospital via ambulance on Sunday afternoon, January 19th, when his condition became critical. At his bedside were his wife, Hulda, four daughters and son.
Mr. Eckburg was born in Ericksburg, Sweden, on January 12, 1867, the son of Hakan and Maria Anderson. The name later was changed to Eckburg.
At the age of 2 years, Enoch and his brother John, came to the United States with their parents in 1869 and settled in Pecatonica, Illinois. Enoch was the last survivor of a family of four brothers.

Mr. Eckburg, in spite of his advanced years, was active and interested in the life of his community up until his last illness. For many years he had been engaged in farming on the homestead south of town. Later, his son Glenwood, took over the management of the farm. He was a former member of the Pecatonica school board and an active and life-long member of the First Lutheran Church of Pecatonica, having served both as deacon and as trustee on the Board of Administration.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2:00 o'clock at the First Lutheran Church. The Rev. J.A. Bonander, pastor of the Salem Lutheran Church of Rockford, officiated. Mrs. Hester Fleming, soloist, sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Going Home." Burial was in the family plot in the Pecatonica Cemetery.
