His father died before 1900 when he and his mother were living in Durant, Ok. with his aunt and uncle Birdie Pickens Maloney and Jesse Maloney.
By 1910, James was living with his mother and stepfather, Frank Harter at 112 Trinidad St. in Dallas. James attended the Reinhardt schools where he was known as a good baseball player.

Prior to 1927, James and Alice moved to Harter Rd. near the dairy and built a home near that of his mother and stepfather. Daughter Margaret (Peggy) was born here in 1927. The family attended Grace United Methodist Church in Dallas.
