Jim was a native Dallasite and resided on part of the original dairy farm land where he was reared. He graduated from Garland High School in 1940 where he served as drum major of the band. After he graduated, he was employed by the Dallas National Bank. He enlisted in the Air Corps and served from 1942 to 1945 as a liason pilot. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Dallas National Bank. In 1946, he accepted a position with the Veterans Administration as Supervisor of Collections and Reconciliation for their insurance section.

He resigned from the VA and assisted in obtaining a charter for the Garland State Bank, which was opened in January, 1947. In October 1947, he became Cashier and Director. He began his career with Lone Star Cement Corporation in 1951 and was appointed Acting Divison Sales Manager in 1967.

Jim was a member of the official board and a former trustee of Grace Methodist Church and served on the Finance Commission and House and Grounds Committee. He was a President of the Methodist Men's Club and the Wedding Band Class. He was a Mason and member of the Hella Temple Shrine.

Jim was also Treasurer and Director of the Garland Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Young Executives - Dallas Council of World Affairs.

Jim's hobby was antique automobiles and he served as President of the Texas Region Antique Automobile Club of America for four terms. He also served as manager of the antique automobile exhibit at the State Fair of Texas. He owned a 1912 Buick, 1925 Pierce Arrow, and a 1929 Model A. Ford and enjoyed doing most of the restorations himself.
