Regina was one of seven children of Lars Rasmus Holm (1846-1894) and Margaret Ingeborg ("Emily") Gullickson (1848-1914). Born in Adams County WI, she moved with her family to Wright, Dickey, North Dakota in the spring of 1882 at age 9. Her father had explored the area the previous fall and came back to take up a homestead claim.
About 1902, Regina married John E. Johnson, also a homesteader. They farmed and ranched in McIntosh county, N. D., raising Black Angus cattle. The couple had nine children: Louise Josephine (1903), Herbert Palmer (1904), Marion Isabel (1905), Mabel Carla (1907), Myrtle (1909), Lillian Henrietta (1909), Wilhelmina (1910), Pearl Estella (1911), and Elsie Margaret (1913).
Regina's parents had emigrated from Norway. Her father was from Eskjen and her mother from Lundby Hurdal (Nannestad Farm). Lars Holm came to America in 1849 as a one-year-old and Ingeborg Gulliksdatter in 1863 at age 15. They married on 7 August 1870 in Strongs Prairie, Admas, Wisconsin and Regina was the first of their eight children. One of Regina's sisters, Maria (Mary) Inge Holm (1881-1958) married a brother of Regina's husband John, Karl Lauritz ("Charles") Johnson (b. 1880). But that couple moved to Saskatchewan immediately upon their marriage in McIntosh Co. ND to live on a homestead Charles had just established there near that of his father Halvor Kristiansen ("Johnson").
