BURLINGTON, VT. - Sister Joyce Ann Barrett RSM (Sister Mary Petronilla), 84, of the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community, Vermont, died at the Mt. St. Mary's Convent in Burlington, Vt. on September 28th 2016.

Sr. Joyce was born in Burlington, Vt. on December 3rd 1931, the daughter of Eveline (Blanchette) Barrett and Daniel Barrett.

She attended Mt. St. Mary Grammar and High School, received a B.A. from Trinity College and a M.A.T. from St. Michael's College.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy August 15th 1949 and was professed on August 18th 1952.

Sr. Joyce taught for a period of twenty-five years at Mt. St. Mary, Christ the King and Cathedral Grammar in Burlington, Marian High in Barre, and Winooski High.

For a few years, she was also responsible for the Religious Education program in St. Albans, Vt.

She was involved in many peace and social justice areas and was the Coordinator of the Mercy Justice Coalition.

She ministered as a nurse's aide to the terminally ill at Calvary hospital and Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx and as the Director of Health Care for the Sisters of Mercy in Burlington, Vt.

She brought compassionate care to the sick and infirm and responded to their needs with concern and mercy. She was a strong advocate for all those in need.

Sr. Joyce was one of the founding sisters of Mercy Bread known as "Compassion in Action".

When she was no longer able to be in active ministry, she volunteered at Mount St. Mary Convent and kept in prayer her family, community and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents Daniel and Eveline Barrett and her sisters Lorraine Barrett (Sr. Mary Charles), Arlene Barrett, and Kathleen Dannehy, and brother Norman Barrett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on October 3, 2016 at Mt. St. Mary Chapel.
