Born on September 20, 1881 in St. John, New Brunswick, Fr. John E. Burke, CSP, graduated from Ottawa University. In 1901, while still in college, he attended a Paulist mission in Ottawa and decided upon a missionary career. He entered the Paulist Fathers in 1905 and was professed on June 16, 1910. He was ordained by Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore on June 21, 1910 with classmates Michael P.L. Ferry, Guy Quinan and John Smyth.

Fr. Burke's early assignments were in Newman and missionary work based in New York, Chicago and Toronto. He gained such renown while working in Toronto he was chosen as the prime eulogist when Canadian Prime Minister and Quebec Catholic hero Sir Wilfrid Laurier died in 1919. In 1923 he was named Superior of the Toronto foundation where he helped build St. Peter's Church.

In 1931 he was named Superior in Chicago. In the late 30's he was briefly the pastor at Saint Paul the Apostle parish in New York, going on to be a curate at New York's Good Shepherd parish before being reappointed Superior in Chicago in 1940.

In the mid to late 1940's Fr. Burke worked in Washington, Detroit and New York in a variety of ministries. In 1952 he was assigned as confessor at the Paulist novitiate in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, where he remained for two years before returning to Saint Paul the Apostle parish in New York. It was there he passed away at the age of 76 after 48 years in the Paulist priesthood.
