Death: Oct. 8, 1908

Joseph Painter, Sr., of Myerstown, died there on Thursday evening about 9 o'clock of a complication of diseases following an illness of three weeks. Owing to his advanced age, he having attained that of 80 years, his condition was considered serious from the beginning of his ailment and the end was expected. Mr. Painter was one of Myerstown's most substantial citizens and businessmen and his death removes one of the pioneers in the town's industrial history. Manifesting an active interest in the progress of his home town and the county as well, he was honored by the Republican Party by election as a member of the board of county commissioners, serving a term of three years. He stood high in councils of his church and at one time labored in the cause as a local minister of the Evangelical church. The history of the Painter family is traced back of Jacob Painter, who immigrated to America from England and settled near Warrick's furnace, in Chester County, All of this good man's descendants have followed his trade that of molder and foundry man, and made the name one of Importance in the Keystone State. One of the sons of Jacob, the emigrant, was also Jacob, who was born in Chester County. Pa., became a molder by trade and was a most excellent man. He was the father of ten children: Joseph, of the firm of Joseph Painter and Sons; Jacob, deceased; Thomas, deceased; Robert, deceased; Valentine, of Leesport, Pa.; Daniel, of Steelton; Priscilla, Barbara, Mary, deceased; and Eliza, deceased. Joseph Painter, Sr., was born December 4, 1822. He became the father of ten children: John L., of this city, now deceased: Jacob H., bookkeeper, Joseph M., general manager of Joseph Painter and Sons, George W., of Reading; Stephen, of Beverly, Kan.; Samuel K., Kansas City, Kan.; Anna C., wife of Milton Gockley, of Lebanon: Mary, wife of John Spangler, of Myerstown; Lizzie F., wife of George Peiffer, Norristown; Matilda, wife of John Shoemaker, Kansas City, Mo. Joseph Painter was an Iron foundry man and molder and ran a foundry in Berks County, but later removed to Myerstown, and has made that place his home for many years. It was about 1848 he first settled in Lebanon County, where he worked in a foundry, but later returned to Berks County, having originally worked in the county of his birthplace. After his return to Berks County, about 1850, he started a foundry at Bernville, and for some years conducted it, but returned to Myerstown, and established the foundry now conducted under the caption of Joseph Painter Sons, which is one of the best known in the entire county. In politics he was a staunch Republican and held the office of County Commissioner for three years and served the county faithfully. The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning with burial at Myerstown. [Lebanon Daily News, October 9, 1908, Page 1 & 6]
