Rose Leah Pouns was born March 19, 1888 in Marion County, MS to Leon Pouns and Edna Herrington. She was one of six children. When her mother, Edna died in 1899, Rose was "given" to a couple to help raise their baby while they worked in the fields. Later Rose was then living in a boarding house with owners John and Eugenia Holmes. They are listed as her guardians on the marriage record for her and Willie Dean August 24, 1906.
The couple had 9 children: Lois (died as an infant), Alice, Viola, Harriet, Dorothy, Juanita, William, Oliver and Robert. Sometime after 1923, Willie left Rose. She worked in fields picking produce and cotton to make ends meet. She was married to a Mr. Ford for less than a year until he died.
She then married Frank Douroux and about 1926 moved to New Orleans. They had five additional children: Rosemary, Kathleen, Dolores, Peter and Frances . Frank was also formerly married and brought nine children of his own to the family!
At some point in the 1950's Rose moved to California. Alice, Rosemary, Peter and Frances lived in California. Frank Douroux died in 1956. Rose stayed in California until the 1970's when she returned to New Orleans where she lived with some of her children until she died.
