Julius was owner of the Portsmouth Brewery, in Portsmouth, Ohio. He immigrated to the States, first to New York then to Cincinnati, Ohio. He operated woman's clothing store in both locations. In the 1880's he relocated to Portsmouth and purchased the brewery in 1889. He remodeled the building and moved the Brew House to the current location. The brewery grew quickly and soon beer was sold all along the Ohio River and northern Kentucky.

Paul, his son, assumed the Brewery after Julius' death. The brewery was closed due to Prohibition in 1919. The building and possessions were auction in 1930. Paul Esselborn was unable to pay taxes.
