William Westwood Shuttlesworth was the son of John Shuttlesworth (VA) and Mary Selene Carr(KY). His brothers were Adolphus and Thomas Shuttlesworth. From his Civil War pension papers he is said to have been 5' 5 3/4" tall, weighed 121 lbs., and had a dark complexion. His first wife was Elizabeth Broadus (1843-1872) and the 1870 Census for the county of Union, KY lists the following children:

Fifteen years after the death of Elizabeth he married Phoebe Spinks on March 2, 1887 in Uniontown, KY. They had at least one daughter named Delilah Shuttlesworth. Phoebe died July 25, 1920.
William served as a private in Company I of the 35th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Union). He enlisted August 18, 1863 in Owensboro, KY and was mustered out on December 29, 1864 in Louisville, KY. During his war service he contracted the Measles which settled in his lungs and led to a very severe lung infection from which he recovered but suffered severe effects from it the rest of his life.
William died March 28, 1912 and was buried in St Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown, KY.
