Charles Harold Hamilton, M.D., 84, died Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Kobacker House. Born at White Cross Hospital in Columbus, he lived his entire life in Columbus and Upper Arlington.

He was one of five children born to Dr. Walter and Gladys Hamilton. He achieved academic excellence while attending Upper Arlington Schools. He was active in football, basketball and track. He attended Northwestern University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He later attended Ohio State University College of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1954. He married Marianne Merriman in 1953 and from that union three children were born.

Postgraduate surgical training was obtained at White Cross Hospital followed by a two year assignment on active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve as Lieutenant medical officer. Following his military tour he completed a two year residency of specialty training in colon and rectal surgery at the Ferguson Clinic and Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI. Dr. Hamilton joined his father Walter and elder brother, Edwin in surgical practice in 1961, and affiliated with White Cross, Riverside Methodist, St. Anthony and Ohio State University Hospitals. He became a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the Royal Society of Medicine, London, UK.

Dr. and Mrs. Hamilton were active members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. They were members of Scioto Country Club, Columbus Athletic Club and the University Club. Dr. Hamilton retired from active surgical practice in 1993. Preceded in death by his loving wife Marianne in 2002 and sister Anne Hamilton Lewis.

He would be proud to be remembered as a compassionate physician to those patients and families to whom he ministered. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the following institutions: Kobacker House, Medical Heritage Center Prior Health Sciences Library c/o Judith Wiener and Chadwick Arboretum at OSU. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL. No calling hours. Private family memorial service.
