Venerable Resident Passes in Death of David Annear

David Anner, one of the oldest residents of the city, was called to his final reward Thursday morning, Feb. 4, at 6:15 o'clock, the end coming at the resident of his sister, Mrs. Thos. Dawe, with whom he had made his home for the past seven years.
Mr. Annear had been an invalid for probably two years and had been critically ill for several days. Death was due to heart trouble.
He was 85 years of age. Surviving him are a daughter in England, his sister, Mrs. Thos. Dawe, who is the last of eleven children, and a number of nephews and nieces residing in this country and also in England. Those residing in this city include Dr. W. T. Dawe, Joe and Arthur Dawe, and Miss Mary Dawe.
Mr. Annear was a native of England and was born in Cornwall, July 14, 1839. He was confirmed in the Episcopal church by the Bishop of York at Drifel in 1853. He came to America in 1878, locating at St. David Ill., where he spent over 40 years. For twelve years he was mayor of St David. He engaged in the coal mining industry in both England and this country.
Seven years ago, following the death of his wife, he came to Gonzales to make his home here, spending his declining days in the home of his sister.
An old gentleman of pleasing personality and winning ways, he quickly won a warm place in the hearts of members of the household who were devoted to him, brightening his last years and giving him the tenderest care in his infirmities. His presence will be sadly missed.
Friday morning the last tribute of respect was paid his memory, when a number of relatives from over the county and friends of the family being assembled for the simple though impressive funeral services conducted at the Dawe residence at 10 o'clock by Rev. J. W. Allbritten, pastor of the First Methodist church assisted by Dr. J. F. James, pastor of the Presbyterian church.
A touching talk was made by Mr. Allbritten in the course of the service and two of the dear familiar hymns were sweetly rendered by the choir, who sang "Asleep in Jesus" and Abide With Me."
The remains were laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery, where a brief service marked the interment.
M. S, Spooner, W. P. Midkiff, Chas. Holmes, Warren Taylor, J. C. Newberry and Claude DuBose were the acting pallbearers.
Numbers of beautiful floral tributes made fair his last resting place among them lovely emblems from church and other organizations with which the family are connected.
A long and useful life has closed, the spirit entering into that rest that remaineth to the children of God, leaving a hollowed memory to be treasured by those nearest and dearest.
Friends and relatives, nieces and nephews from Nixon, Wrightsboro and other parts of the county were in attendance at the funeral.
