Nathaniel taught school in Musselfork Township during the years 1878, 1879 and 1880 while renting a farm in the same township. In 1881, he bought a farm in Randolph County which he operated five years. He went to Kansas for a year and returned to Salisbury Township and farmed. On March 20, 1893 he purchased a 150 acre farm in Keytesville Township where he raised shorthorn cattle and other livestock. He married Emma Smith, daugher of James and Wilhelmina (Chrane) Smith. They had one son, Ross. Emma passed away in 1888. He later married Florence Carlstead, daughter of Christian and Mary (Klink) Carlstead. Nathaniel and Florence had six children, Mary, William, Norvell, Nathaniel, Christine and Henry.

Ross married Floy Naomi (Howey) Allen (b 6-1-1887, d 3-17-1977) who grew up in Brashear, MO. They married in 1919 and lived in Kirksville, MO. Ross was a dentist who completed his training at Washington University. Before that, he taught school several years in Chariton County and was Principal of the State School for the Blind in St. Louis for two years. His wife Floy was a church organist at the local Methodist Church in Kirksville for 50 years. Ross and Floy had one son, Ross Clearman Allen, Jr. (1921-2003). Ross, Jr. was an instructor of opera theatre and stage direction at Indiana University and had a regular opera radio program at IU's radio station, WFIU. The following excerpt is from a bio of Ross, Jr. written by Frank Merkling, Opera News Editor: Ross Clearman Allen, Jr. staged the choral episodes of Britten's Billy Budd for the first American production (1952). Ross joined the faculty at Indiana in 1953 and has directed more than 130 works, including the first presentation outside New York of Bernstein's Candide (1958), American premières of Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve and Martinů's The Greek Passion, and world premières of John Eaton's Myshkin (1973) and (for children) The Lion and Androcles (1974). In Houston he staged the Aida that opened Jones Hall (1966); he has also been involved in modern recreations of liturgical drama and Renaissance entertainments. In 1969 he won a Peabody Award for his television production of Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers.

Mary Roe Allen was born in Keytesville, Missouri. On November 13, 1923, Mary married Oliver "Ollie" Irvin McCullough (b 7-13-1896, d 1-7-1988). Mary and Ollie lived on a farm east of Keytesville for several years before moving to a farm in Carrollton, Missouri. Mary and Ollie had no children. Mary taught in the rural schools of Chariton and Carroll Counties for 18 years. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Keytesville. Ollie was the son of Charles Irvin and Suzanna B. (Jennings) McCullough. Ollie attended the Dean Lake School and was a member of the Dean Lake Baptist Church. Aunt Mary was a quiet, thoughtful, gentle person with a great sense of humor. Uncle Ollie always seemed happy and serene. Ollie has two brothers, James Orville McCullough (b 1898, d 1901) and Manuel J. McCullough (b 10-11-1889, d 4-25-1970 - MO Pvt. First Class Company D. 7 Ammo Train, WWI) and a sister, Mrs. Lela Margaret (McCullough) Smith, who lived in Brunswick, Missouri (b 11-23-1902, d 5-4-1996). Lela married Willard A. Smith. They lived at Dean Lake and settled in Brunswick, Missouri. Lela was a housewife, of Baptist faith and a member of Brunswick American Legion Auxillary. Lela and Willard have three daughters:
-Billie Jean (Smith) Watkins (married to Howard Watkins, Jr.) Independence, Missouri.
-Betty Lou (Smith) Agee (b 1-18-1930, d 3-25-2001)(married to Harry Frank Agee, d 12-7-1992) Salisbury, Missouri. Betty and Frank had no children. Betty was a homemaker and worked four years at Kansas City Power and Light and four years at William Jewell College in Liberty. Betty was a member of BrunswicK United Methodist Church.
-Marcy Lee (Smith) Reynolds (b 9-10-1932, d 4-25-2000)(married to James Payton Reynolds (b 3-12-1929, d 7-5-2010, son of A.J. Payton Reynolds) Salisbury, Missouri. Marcy Reynolds was Chariton County Deputy County Clerk and Recorder of Deeds for many years. James Payton Reynolds farmed and worked a Foremost milk route, was a meat cutter for Kroger Grocery, worked for Walsworth Publishing and owned/operated Midway Publishing Company in Salisbury. He was a shriner and Lions Club member. Marcy Lee and James Payton Reynolds have three daughters:

William Edward Allen

William married Opal Camille Arnold (b 8-27-1904, d 5-26-1990). They married in 1950. Opal was born in Mantee, Mississippi and was a retired school teacher of Arkansas and Missouri schools. She was the daughter of Thomas L. Arnold (b 12-28-1889, 1-10-1971) and Artie Scott Arnold (b. 6-16-1885, d. 8- 3-1968). Her siblings were Roy Scott Arnold, Esther Thompson-wife of Cleetis (b 1917, d 6-28-2005) and LaQuex Jones). William Allen was previously married to Margaret "Peggy" Browne (b 1-15-1905, d 10-28-1971) in 1927, but they divorced. William and Opal lived in southern Missouri and then settled in Paragould, AR. William was a World War I veteran and a retired government employee. He had no Children. In his early career, he was a county extension agent. He especially loved gardening. At the time of his death in 1979, he had two living sisters, Mary McCullough of Carrollton, MO and Christine Jones of Stilwell, KS.

Norvell married Ruth (Hostler) Allen (b 8-25-1901 in Grafton, West Virginia, d 8-30-1996). They married in Independence, MO on May 20, 1932 and lived in Kirksville, MO. Ruth held a B.S. (American College of PE Chicago) and Master's (Teachers College of Columbia University, NY) in Physical Education and taught at Nowata and Okmulgee, OK, Kirksville Public Schools and Northeast MO State Teachers College. Norvell taught agriculture classes at Kirksville Public Schools and later at Northeast Missouri State University (Now Truman State University) for 23 years. He completed a B.S. and Master's in agriculture, dairy science at University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a member of the Northeast Missouri Fair Association Board and the publicity department of the Missouri State Fair for many years. Norvell and Ruth had three children, William Hostler Allen, Thomas Norvell Allen and Jennie Sue (Allen) Ross.
Dr. Nathaniel Newton Allen Jr.

Nathaniel married Mildred (Wisner) Allen at Hannibal, MO in 1930. They lived in Madison, Wisconsin where Nat was a professor of dairy nutrition and taught dairy classes. Nat received a B.S. Degree at University of Missour-Columbia and Ph.D. at University of Minnesota. He taught dairy courses at Minnesota, University of Vermont and University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as a director and vice-president of the American Dairy Association. He wrote a column for the Wisconsin Dairyman. He is among those recognized as dairy pioneers by the Dairy Shrine Museum Hall of Fame in Fort Atkinson, WI. He was recognized for his research on dairy cattle nutrition. Nat and Mildred had six children: Patricia, Virginia, Sarah, James, Edward and David.
Christine (Allen) Jones
(b 12-27-1903, d 4-12-1984)
Christine (Allen) Jones was born at the family farm near Keytesville, Missouri. Christine married Arthur Langley Jones (b 7-10-1898 on his parent's farm near Lenexa, Kansas, d 6-29-1993 in Wayne County, Michigan). Christine taught school briefly in Chariton County before marrying Arthur and moving to Kansas City. Christine and Arthur took an apartment in Kansas City, and Christine was employed as the secretary to the Kansas City Superintendent of Schools (Miss. Wicki). Arthur began a law practice in Kansas City. Christine also attended a secretarial school to train in shorthand and typing. While working, she took courses in drawing and painting. Christine and Arthur had a happy life. Arthur was affable and easygoing. Christine and Arthur encouraged their children to take music lessons and succeed in school. During World War II, they purchased a wooded farm plot of 150 acres near Stilwell, Kansas where they enjoyed picnics and working in the woods. Son Richard began college at the University of Michigan in 1949, and daughter Susie attended there two years later. Christine and Arthur built a home on their farm land in the early 1950's. Daughter Susie married shortly afterward. When Christine and Arthur were in their 80's (in the early 1980's), they moved to Wayne County, Michigan to be near their son Richard and daughter Susie (Martha Sue) Russell and their families. Children of Richard Jones: Leslie (Jones) Zeller (husband Paul Zeller, one daughter), Christine (Jones) Juneau (husband David Juneau, a son and daughter) and Steve Jones (wife Sharon, two daughters).
Henry Ehrhardt Allen

Henry married Mabel (Homsley) Allen on October 21, 1934. Mabel attended Stephens College. Henry completed a B.S. Degree in horticulture, soils and dairy science at University of Missouri-Columbia. He had a small dairy farm (Sunnydale Farm) during college and later farmed in Keytesville, Missouri. He was also a county extension agent in the mid-1930's. He enjoyed working with the local historical society. Henry and Mabel had six children: Carol DeLancey (Children Katie, Tommy, Jimmy, Laura), Polly Chung married Anthony Chung (Children Rebecca and Estella), Duke (Henry D.) married Ruth Sanders (Children Stephanie, Emilie, Anita), George married Micki Hagen (Children Nathan, Elizabeth), Laura married Fred Loesing (No children) and Eddie (David E) married Mindy Wilson (Children Jonathan, Jennifer).

Mary taught in the rural schools of Chariton and Carroll Counties for 18 years. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Keytesville. Ollie was the son of Charles Irvin and Suzanna B. (Jennings) McCullough. Ollie attended the Dean Lake School and was a member of the Dean Lake Baptist Church. Aunt Mary was a quiet, thoughtful, gentle person with a great sense of humor. Uncle Ollie always seemed happy and serene. Ollie has two brothers, James Orville McCullough (b 1898, d 1901) and Manuel J. McCullough (b 10-11-1889, d 4-25-1970 - MO Pvt. First Class Company D. 7 Ammo Train, WWI) and a sister, Mrs. Lela Margaret (McCullough) Smith, who lived in Brunswick, Missouri (b 11-23-1902, d 5-4-1996). Lela married Willard A. Smith. They lived at Dean Lake and settled in Brunswick, Missouri. Lela was a housewife, of Baptist faith and a member of Brunswick American Legion Auxillary. Lela and Willard have three daughters:
-Billie Jean (Smith) Watkins (married to Howard Watkins, Jr.) Independence, Missouri.
-Betty Lou (Smith) Agee (b 1-18-1930, d 3-25-2001)(married to Harry Frank Agee, d 12-7-1992) Salisbury, Missouri. Betty and Frank had no children. Betty was a homemaker and worked four years at Kansas City Power and Light and four years at William Jewell College in Liberty. Betty was a member of BrunswicK United Methodist Church.
-Marcy Lee (Smith) Reynolds (b 9-10-1932, d 4-25-2000)(married to James Payton Reynolds (b 3-12-1929, d 7-5-2010, son of A.J. Payton Reynolds) Salisbury, Missouri. Marcy Reynolds was Chariton County Deputy County Clerk and Recorder of Deeds for many years. James Payton Reynolds farmed and worked a Foremost milk route, was a meat cutter for Kroger Grocery, worked for Walsworth Publishing and owned/operated Midway Publishing Company in Salisbury. He was a shriner and Lions Club member. Marcy Lee and James Payton Reynolds have three daughters:

William Edward Allen

William married Opal Camille Arnold (b 8-27-1904, d 5-26-1990). They married in 1950. Opal was born in Mantee, Mississippi and was a retired school teacher of Arkansas and Missouri schools. She was the daughter of Thomas L. Arnold (b 12-28-1889, 1-10-1971) and Artie Scott Arnold (b. 6-16-1885, d. 8- 3-1968). Her siblings were Roy Scott Arnold, Esther Thompson-wife of Cleetis (b 1917, d 6-28-2005) and LaQuex Jones). William Allen was previously married to Margaret "Peggy" Browne (b 1-15-1905, d 10-28-1971) in 1927, but they divorced. William and Opal lived in southern Missouri and then settled in Paragould, AR. William was a World War I veteran and a retired government employee. He had no Children. In his early career, he was a county extension agent. He especially loved gardening. At the time of his death in 1979, he had two living sisters, Mary McCullough of Carrollton, MO and Christine Jones of Stilwell, KS.
Norvell Christian (Pete) Allen

Norvell married Ruth (Hostler) Allen (b 8-25-1901 in Grafton, West Virginia, d 8-30-1996). They married in Independence, MO on May 20, 1932 and lived in Kirksville, MO. Ruth held a B.S. (American College of PE Chicago) and Master's (Teachers College of Columbia University, NY) in Physical Education and taught at Nowata and Okmulgee, OK, Kirksville Public Schools and Northeast MO State Teachers College. Norvell taught agriculture classes at Kirksville Public Schools and later at Northeast Missouri State University (Now Truman State University) for 23 years. He completed a B.S. and Master's in agriculture, dairy science at University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a member of the Northeast Missouri Fair Association Board and the publicity department of the Missouri State Fair for many years. Norvell and Ruth had three children, William Hostler Allen, Thomas Norvell Allen and Jennie Sue (Allen) Ross.
Dr. Nathaniel Newton Allen Jr.

Nathaniel married Mildred (Wisner) Allen at Hannibal, MO in 1930. They lived in Madison, Wisconsin where Nat was a professor of dairy nutrition and taught dairy classes. Nat received a B.S. Degree at University of Missour-Columbia and Ph.D. at University of Minnesota. He taught dairy courses at Minnesota, University of Vermont and University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as a director and vice-president of the American Dairy Association. He wrote a column for the Wisconsin Dairyman. He is among those recognized as dairy pioneers by the Dairy Shrine Museum Hall of Fame in Fort Atkinson, WI. He was recognized for his research on dairy cattle nutrition. Nat and Mildred had six children: Patricia, Virginia, Sarah, James, Edward and David.
Christine (Allen) Jones

Christine (Allen) Jones was born at the family farm near Keytesville, Missouri. Christine married Arthur Langley Jones (b 7-10-1898 on his parent's farm near Lenexa, Kansas, d 6-29-1993 in Wayne County, Michigan). Christine taught school briefly in Chariton County before marrying Arthur and moving to Kansas City. Christine and Arthur took an apartment in Kansas City, and Christine was employed as the secretary to the Kansas City Superintendent of Schools (Miss. Wicki). Arthur began a law practice in Kansas City. Christine also attended a secretarial school to train in shorthand and typing. While working, she took courses in drawing and painting. Christine and Arthur had a happy life. Arthur was affable and easygoing. Christine and Arthur encouraged their children to take music lessons and succeed in school. During World War II, they purchased a wooded farm plot of 150 acres near Stilwell, Kansas where they enjoyed picnics and working in the woods. Son Richard began college at the University of Michigan in 1949, and daughter Susie attended there two years later. Christine and Arthur built a home on their farm land in the early 1950's. Daughter Susie married shortly afterward. When Christine and Arthur were in their 80's (in the early 1980's), they moved to Wayne County, Michigan to be near their son Richard and daughter Susie (Martha Sue) Russell and their families. Children of Richard Jones: Leslie (Jones) Zeller (husband Paul Zeller, one daughter), Christine (Jones) Juneau (husband David Juneau, a son and daughter) and Steve Jones (wife Sharon, two daughters).
Henry Ehrhardt Allen

Henry married Mabel (Homsley) Allen on October 21, 1934. Mabel attended Stephens College. Henry completed a B.S. Degree in horticulture, soils and dairy science at University of Missouri-Columbia. He had a small dairy farm (Sunnydale Farm) during college and later farmed in Keytesville, Missouri. He was also a county extension agent in the mid-1930's. He enjoyed working with the local historical society. Henry and Mabel had six children: Carol DeLancey (Children Katie, Tommy, Jimmy, Laura), Polly Chung married Anthony Chung (Children Rebecca and Estella), Duke (Henry D.) married Ruth Sanders (Children Stephanie, Emilie, Anita), George married Micki Hagen (Children Nathan, Elizabeth), Laura married Fred Loesing (No children) and Eddie (David E) married Mindy Wilson (Children Jonathan, Jennifer).

Nathaniel taught school in Musselfork Township during the years 1878, 1879 and 1880 while renting a farm in the same township. In 1881, he bought a farm in Randolph County which he operated five years. He went to Kansas for a year and returned to Salisbury Township and farmed. On March 20, 1893 he purchased a 150 acre farm in Keytesville Township where he raised shorthorn cattle and other livestock. He married Emma Smith, daugher of James and Wilhelmina (Chrane) Smith. They had one son, Ross. Emma passed away in 1888. He later married Florence Carlstead, daughter of Christian and Mary (Klink) Carlstead. Nathaniel and Florence had six children, Mary, William, Norvell, Nathaniel, Christine and Henry.

Ross married Floy Naomi (Howey) Allen (b 6-1-1887, d 3-17-1977) who grew up in Brashear, MO. They married in 1919 and lived in Kirksville, MO. Ross was a dentist who completed his training at Washington University. Before that, he taught school several years in Chariton County and was Principal of the State School for the Blind in St. Louis for two years. His wife Floy was a church organist at the local Methodist Church in Kirksville for 50 years. Ross and Floy had one son, Ross Clearman Allen, Jr. (1921-2003). Ross, Jr. was an instructor of opera theatre and stage direction at Indiana University and had a regular opera radio program at IU's radio station, WFIU. The following excerpt is from a bio of Ross, Jr. written by Frank Merkling, Opera News Editor: Ross Clearman Allen, Jr. staged the choral episodes of Britten's Billy Budd for the first American production (1952). Ross joined the faculty at Indiana in 1953 and has directed more than 130 works, including the first presentation outside New York of Bernstein's Candide (1958), American premières of Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve and Martinů's The Greek Passion, and world premières of John Eaton's Myshkin (1973) and (for children) The Lion and Androcles (1974). In Houston he staged the Aida that opened Jones Hall (1966); he has also been involved in modern recreations of liturgical drama and Renaissance entertainments. In 1969 he won a Peabody Award for his television production of Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers.
