Corp. James Alfonza Askins was the son of Dennis Askins and Amanda Maude Wells. He was the grandson of John "Jack" Wells and Didamia Smith. James married Martha V. Nelson 27 Feb 1869 in Chilton County, Alabama.

1st Corporal James A. Askins

Member of Company C, 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Enlisted as a Private at Chestnut Creek summer of 1861. Soon after, transferred to 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment Company G at the rank of 1st Corporal . Served in Wheeler's Cavalry until paroled at Raliegh, NC at close of war where his Regiment surrendered to Gen. Sherman.
