John A. Eimes, a former teacher and military instructor at Christian Brothers College high school, died Tuesday (Jan 14, 1997) at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur after a brief illness. He was 65 and lived in Maryland Heights.
Mr. Eimes was senior Army instructor of the ROTC program at CBC, where he taught psychology and history and was the rifle instructor and tennis coach. He retired in 1988. He also taught business for 15 years at the Columbia College-St. Louis campus on Woodson Road.
He was born in Louisville, Ky. He earned a bachelor's degree at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo, and a master's degree from what is now Webster University. He served in the Army for 21 years. He fought in the Korean War and was wounded in battle.
He also served as a military adviser in the Vietnam War. He retired as a master sergeant in 1968. Mr. Eimes was the grandfather of Ronald Michael Murphy, the infant who at 11 weeks old received a heart transplant in November at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Mr. Eimes nicknamed his grandson "Brave Heart."
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Collier's Funeral Home, 3400 North Lindbergh Boulevard, St. Ann. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Blaise Catholic Church, 3130 Parkwood Lane, Maryland Heights. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Among the survivors, in addition to his grandson, are two daughters, Gigi M (Jim) Hassos of Hazelwood and Catherine (Ronald) Murphy of St. Ann; a son, John Eimes of Jefferson County; a sister, Virginia Behr, of Louisville, KY. and six other grandchildren.
Daughter, Virginia 'Gini' (Steve) Webb of San Diego, CA and Father of his late son, Michael T.Eimes (1974-1997).
