Born in Cloverport, Kentucky in 1896, by 1918 Frances was living in Chicago, where she was enrolled in the Chicago Musical College (the fourth conservatory in the country). There she met and married (1923) Charles F. Johnson, a musician who worked as a piano tuner for the Chicago Board of Education. She and her husband worked evenings and nights as a performing duo at various restaurants, bars, and night clubs in the city, and called themselves the "Kentucky Harmonists". The family lived on Kenwood Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood near the University of Chicago. They had three children: Grace F., Charles A., and Murray L. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan in January 1930. Frances died at age 39 in Eloise hospital, Wayne, Michigan. She is buried in Cap Anderson at her father's feet with 7 of her 8 Brown siblings. Charles Johnson never remarried. He died and was interred in Los Angeles, California in 1964.
