Myrtle Beach, SC - William (Bill) R. Barr, 81, passed away Sunday, July 21, after a brief respite at Agape Rehabilitation Center in Conway.
Bill was born January 4, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Ruben and Pauline (Greenberg) Barr Mallach whom he adored very much. He was predeceased by a brother, Jesse Barr, and a sister, Rose Barr. He is survived by his three sons, Richard M. Barr and his wife, Laura, of Holbrook, MA; David A. Barr of Avon, MA; and Jeffrey T. Barr and his wife, Karen, of Holden, MA; and his daughter, Sharon L. Barr, of Worcester, MA. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Melanie Gagne, Melissa Barr, Christopher Barr, Emily Barr, and Rachel Barr, and one great-grandson, Ryan Gagne, all of MA.
He was a true New Yorker living in Brooklyn and Central Islip on Long Island for many years before retiring to Myrtle Beach in 1994. As a child, he spent many summers at the family's upstate farm in Youngsville, NY, riding horses and helping with chores including harvesting the apple trees. He enjoyed watching the Brooklyn Dodgers growing up as a member of the Police Athletic League Knothole Club but finally saw the light and became an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan later in life. After graduating from public high school in Manhattan where he received a New York Times Literature Award, he joined the United States Air Force and served overseas as a pilot in the Korean War conflict. After the war, he returned home and spent his professional years as a mechanic in the aviation industry and finally as a superintendent for the New York City Transit Authority.
He enjoyed movies (especially the classics), NASCAR racing, Cadillacs, keeping up with current events, a good bargain, and his grand-dogs, Sammy and Simon. He was also a member of the Myrtle Beach Moose Lodge Chapter 268.
The family would like to especially thank Sue O'Hearn, Bill's longtime loyal friend, and her loving family, as well as Patti Davis, Candy and Chasity Holden, and his neighbors, Dub and Marlene Speight, for the kindness and care they showed to him during his final years and his greatest time of need.
Military Honors will be bestowed and funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 30, at the Hillcrest Mausoleum Chapel in Conway. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Mausoleum Chapel.
