Despite what might be implied in various US records, he was born in about 1829 in Nova Scotia, Canada, a son of William and Margaret Cropley. At some point after 1842 his family migrated to Lubec, Washington County, Maine, where all of the male members were engaged as seamen, i.e., fishermen. On July 21, 1854, Abraham acquired a Seaman's Protection Certificate, falsly claiming to have been born in Lubec, Maine. This certificate was issued to prove US citizenship so as to avoid being impressed into British naval service. At some point soon after 1860 he migrated west to the area of Little Lake, Mendocino County, California, where he engaged in farming. A younger brother, David Messenger Cropley (Memorial #28775038), either accompanied him or followed shortly afterward. On October 6, 1864 he married Mary Margaret Blosser, a daughter of Jacob and Martha (Martin) Blosser. To this union was born one daughter, Martha Margaret Cropley, who was raised by the Blosser family after the untimely deaths of her parents.

Abraham's will was dated November 9, 1870, just 6 days before his death, so it would appear that he was ill and suspected that he would not survive much longer. Heirs named include his mother Margarette [sic, Margaret] Cropley of Lubec, Maine, his daughter Martha Margarette [sic, Margaret] Cropley, and his brother David Cropley. In the event of his mother's death, his brother David Cropley, (elder) half-brother (by the mother) John Ferguson, and nephew (Isaac) Henry Cropley (son of David) (Memorial #28775040) were to inherit her share.
