|Birth: ||Sep. 5, 1923|

Previous married name was HARGIS.
World War II Veteran of the WAVES.
The WAVES were a World War II-era division of the U.S. Navy that consisted entirely of women.
Zonia Lee Baker Adkins was my Mom's step-sister. When Zonia and her Mom came into the family, she was the same age as my Mom. They went all through school together in the same class and graduated the same day.
Zonia's father died the day she was born in 1923. Imagine her mother losing her husband and having a baby on the same day!
Her mother married my grandfather about 7 years later.
Zonia Lee Adkins of Philadelphia died Dec. 30, 2008, at the Hopkins Center Nursing Center in Wyncote. She was 85.
Born in Bluffton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Lavaun (Garrett) Baker.
She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate second class and was honorably discharged in December 1945.
She was a nurse at Metropolitan Hospital in Philadelphia for many years prior to her retirement.
She is survived by her 2 daughters, and her son, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her 2 half-sisters.
According to her obituary, interment was to be in Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, N.J., along with an Infant Daughter Hargis, and a son, Clifford Hargis.
Rest in peace Zonia.
