Caroline Smith Sheehan, 80, passed away in Jacksonville, FL, on February 21, 2014. She was laid to rest on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Oaklawn Cemetery. A private memorial service was held at the graveside by her pastor, friends, and family. Caroline was the only child of the late Gus F. Smith and Eula Stagg Smith.

Caroline was a member of the Arlington Methodist Church. She graduated in 1952 from Landon high school where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Lionettes marching team, and several clubs.

Caroline had an incredible thirst for knowledge, and was an avid reader all of her life. Throughout the years, she took college classes and other courses which interested her. She worked for banks in Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Tallahassee during the first 10 years of marriage. Her middle years found her tutoring part-time at a private church school on a one-on-one basis with children. For about 10 years, she was a receptionist at an Arlington insurance company. Also, she helped when she was needed at several other companies.

Until her health prevented it, Caroline loved working in her yard and growing pretty flowers, especially, amaryllis. She enjoyed giving amaryllis bulbs to her friends at Christmas for many years. Also, throughout her lifetime, Caroline baked "hundreds" of pound cakes which she gave to her friends on happy occasions as well as sad occasions. Her life was always filled with family and friends, and she took great joy in visiting them whenever she could. She was a wonderful guest in the homes of others. Caroline gave generous and lovely gifts to her friends, and she always remembered birthdays with cards, calls, or flowers. She never failed to write thank-you notes promptly. Caroline always had a positive attitude and a quick wit, and it was always a pleasure to be around her.

Caroline loved to travel and had been to about 27 countries in Europe one or more times. Some of which were Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Russia. In Ireland, Caroline actually climbed down and, while hanging upside down, "kissed" the Blarney Stone. While in London, England, she took a three-hour bus ride especially to see the Stonehenge monuments. She enjoyed all the famous sites in Paris and London on more than one occasion. She rode the "Orient Express" train, and had a boat ride on the Rhine in Germany. When in Israel, Caroline placed a note on the holy "Wailing Wall" in Jerusalem. She enjoyed visiting Greece, Turkey, and Egypt. While in Egypt, she took a boat ride on the Nile, saw the pyramids, and had her picture taken on a camel. She enjoyed two cruises to Mexico. She flew twice to beautiful Hawaii. Her favorite trip was a fabulous three-week cruise to Alaska. Having an adventurous spirit, Caroline went white-water rafting, and flew in a hot-air balloon high over Jacksonville. She enjoyed annual summer trips with close friends to the mountains of North Carolina. Also, Caroline took the opportunity to visit her longtime friend since childhood, Shirley Chafin Snyder, in Columbia, SC, every two years, riding with friends coming to the Gator-Gamecocks football game. Caroline visited almost all of the states in America, and saw most of the famous sites. Her favorite American city was New Orleans where she honeymooned and often returned to visit. Caroline led a very interesting and fulfilling life until her health began to fail in recent years. She continued walking "a mile" each morning around her neighborhood for as long as she was able.

She was preceded in death by her son, James "Gregg" Gregory Sheehan; and her former husband and best friend, James "Jimmy" H. Sheehan. Surviving are her daughter, Kelly Elizabeth Sheehan; a special favorite cousin, Janice H. Snyder; many loved cousins; and special longtime friends.

Caroline is at peace now, and is reunited with her beloved son, "Gregg," Jimmy, her parents, and much-loved grandmother, "Sugar Pie."

Caroline will be greatly missed by all of us, and will never be forgotten.
