BELMONT — Sidney J. Bean, 74, of 16 Spruce Drive died peacefully at his home on Saturday, April 28, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born March 29, 1933, in Laconia, son of Gordon F. and Alice (Powell) Bean, he lived in Northfield for many years before moving to Belmont 18 years ago.

Mr. Bean served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a lifelong member of the Wilkins Smith Post 1, American Legion.

He worked as a carpenter for many years before becoming disabled in 1983.

Mr. Bean loved to putter in his woodshop and make birdhouses and lawn ornaments. He also loved growing roses.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Charlotte (Hatch) Bean; sons Randy Bean of New Hampton and Douglas Bean and his wife, Susan, of Sanbornton; daughters Melody Crockett and her husband, Steven, of Belmont and Sandy Mayo and her husband, Michael, of Concord; grandchildren Tobey Bean of Gilford, Corey Bean of Laconia, Katie Bean of Connecticut, Nicholas Bean of Belmont, Adam Crockett of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Andrew Crockett of Belmont, Christie Mayo of Concord, Karen Harris of Concord and Michael Mayo II of Hooksett; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters Jane Shepard and Joan Philbrick of Laconia.

He was predeceased by son Bruce Bean in June 2006 and by two brothers, John and James Bean.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, May 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, May 2, at 11 a.m., also in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the N.H. State Veterans' Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Route 3, Boscawen at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Health & Hospice, Inc., 780 North Main St., Laconia NH 03246.
