Lawrence "Larry" E. Vogltanz, Sr. was born in Geneva, Nebraska. He was the oldest child of the late James Vogltanz and Irene Wilson. He graduated from South Omaha High School in 1944 and entered pilot training with the US Navy. World War II ended before he completed the courses, so he went to work for Bell Telephone. He met Velma Jancik at a polka dance in Omaha and they married in 1947. Larry then reentered the US Navy and spent the next 24 years serving as an electrician on surface ships in the Pacific fleet, including serving as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the USS Bon Homme Richard during the Vietnam campaign. He retired as a Master Chief in 1971. After he retired from the Navy, he accepted a position with Kitsap County Public Works. He served in various capacities for 17 years, retiring as the waste water supervisor, in 1988.

Larry and wife Velma spent their retirement years traveling the country enjoying polka dancing, camping, fishing, and visiting with family and friends. Larry was a decorated veteran, a successful leader, a loving husband, a caring father, but truly excelled at being a grandpa. Larry was very involved in his community. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1379. Larry was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 310; the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter WA 5; a life member of the American Legion, Post 149; a 30 year member of the Elks, Lodge 1181; a 40 year member of the Eagles, Aerie 192; and served on the executive board of the Retired Public Employees Council.

Larry passed away peacefully of natural causes in the early morning of August 31, 2013 while being attended by the loving staff at Ashley Gardens in Bremerton. Larry was 86 years old. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Velma; and his sister, Thelma Gliwa formerly of Omaha, Neb. Larry was survived by his three sons, Larry, Jr. and his wife Stacy of Wasilla, Alaska; James of San Diego, Calif.; Dale and his wife Jean of Bremerton; and his daughter, Barbara Nowak and her husband Doug of Springfield, Va. He was also survived by his 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, with viewing beginning at 9 a.m., Rosary at 10:30 a.m., and the Mass following at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations were requested for the Bremerton Chapter 5 of the Disabled American Veterans, located at 2315 Burwell, Bremerton, WA 98312. He was to be interred with his wife Velma Ann Vogltanz.
