Ref: Boston Passenger List Arrivals, Jul 10 - Sep 20, 1884, Call #SL 419,988, Microcopy #M-277, Roll 94, List #354-544, Los Angeles Temple: Steamship #1284, Marathon, [14] July 1884 [Liverpool], 363: "LIST OF PASSENGERS: I, Edward Wylie, Master of the SS Marathon, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collectors of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston is a full and perfect List of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Lpool from which port the said vessel has now arived; and that on the said list are truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, and the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the Nativity of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country.
