Arthur was a land owner in Carter County Tenneesee, where he bought and owned many acres of land. He owned 640 acres north of Stoney Creek on the spurs of Holston Mountain to the foot of Iron Mountain, including plantation where Arthur Johnston formerly lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains.

He married Mary Katharine Kyle, who was born in Tyrone County, Ireland. To this union, 2 children were born:

Eleanor Nelly
Elizabeth Betsey

Arthur was a Patriot was severed in the American Revolution War. He was killed at the Battle of Brandywine and is buired in the mass grave along with many other soldiers who are buried there as well in the Peace Garden Section in the Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery.


Arthur was known as a hard working man, who had a kind heart to his fellow mankind.
