Don was born March 7, 1932 in Quincy the son of Edward and Dorothy Piercy Bartelt. He graduated from Quincy Senior High School in the class of 1950.
Don married Jacqueline (Jackie) Riddle on December 2, 1950. She survives. He served 4 years in the Navy from 1951 – 1955; during the Korean Conflict. He and his brother, Gene, served on the same ship, LST 1082. After his return home, Don served an apprenticeship with Lugering Plumbing. He worked through the union office, sometimes traveling great distances from home to work in new construction. He was a fifty year lifetime member of United Association of Plumbers, Local #25.
He was appointed City Plumbing Inspector for the City of Quincy in 1989, until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of AFSCME Retirees and IMRF.
Don was a volunteer with the Blessing Men’s Escort Team for a number of years and was honored as a member of RSVP Hall of Fame, in 2007.
He is survived by: his wife and one daughter, Julie, and her husband, Curt Kelty of Quincy; one grandson Brian Kelty, his wife Jennifer of Quincy; and one granddaughter, Brandy Mcanally of St. Joseph, MO; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Dixie Baker and her husband Elmo and their children of Effingham, IL area; and Patricia Huechteman and her husband Don and their children; and his mother-in-law, Lorean Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eugene "Gene" Bartelt.
Don was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and a lifetime member of ELKS Lodge #100.
