Emmett Conrad Wika, age 79, a longtime resident of Raymond, died on Tuesday evening, June 6,2000, at the Beverly Healthcare-Clark where he had resided a short time.
He was born Feb 13,1921, in Grafield Township, northwest of Clark, the son of Nels and Lydia (Wee) Wika. He attended the first eight grades at a country school. In 1941 he graduated from Clark High School.
In November of 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy. On Dec 14,1942, he was united in marriage to Ruth Danforth at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark. Following their marriage the couple lived in Memphis, TN, and Beaufort, S.C. while he was in the military. He was a control tower operator and a second class petty officer and line chief on the squadron that was stationed at Beaufort Naval Air Base. After his discharge in May of 1945, they returned to Raymond where he began a career with the post office as rural carrier for 40 years in Raymond and Clark, retiring in 1986.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Clark Center Lutheran Church north of Clark. He was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Raymond where he served as treasurer for many years. He served on the Raymond school board as president and board member. On March 15,1995, he was awarded his 50-year membership pin from the American Legion Baker Post #209 at Raymond. He was also a 53-year member of the Rural Mail Carrier Association.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating and the time he and his wife spent at their lake cottage at Lake Kampeska.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ruth of Raymond; two sons, Thayne and wife Stephanie of Aberdeen, and Mark and wife Candy of Aurora, CO; six grandchildren, Jeb, Cenah, Lacey and Tanner Wika, all of Aberdeen, and Aaryn and Andrew Wika of Aurora, CO; two sisters, Orva Schwartz of Clark and Nora Davis and husband Jack of Watertown; three brothers, Maurice Wika and wife Mary of Watertown, Alvin Wika and wife Darlene of Clark, and LeRoy Wika and wife Delores (Wink) of North Platte, NE; a sister-in-law, Marbeth Wika of Clark; three half-sisters, Lois Hankins and husband Stan of Albert Lea, MN; Sylvia Davis of Culver City, CA; and Joyce Thies of Ames, IA; and a half-brother, Glenn Wika and wife Cindy of Sioux Falls.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Normal Wika; and a sister, Mildred Cochrane.
