Thomas F. Hickey, 85, a retired Army lieutenant general who was a decorated veteran of three wars, died of respiratory arrest Nov. 18 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He lived in Arlington.
A platoon commander during World War I, he participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. During World War II, he was chief of staff of X Corps, and then artillery commander of the 31st Infantry (Dixie) Division in the Southwest Pacific theater. In 1953, he was sent to Korea as commanding general of IX Corps in Korea.
Gen. Hickey was a native of South Boston, Mass., and enlisted in the Army as a private in 1916. He received his commission in the field artillery later that year. From 1946 to 1950, he was chief of staff of U.S. occupation forces in Austria, under Gen. Mark Clark.
He then completed the basic airborne course and jump school. He then commanded the famed 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps before going to Korea. He was commanding general of the Third Army at Fort McPherson, Ga., from 1955 to 1958. He spent four years as chairman of the net evaluation committee at the Pentagon before retiring from active duty in 1962.
His decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. He also held two papal orders and had received honorary doctorates from Merrimack College and Fordham University.
His wife, the former Estelle Kennard, died in 1972. His survivors include a son, Joseph, of Allison Park, Pa.; a daughter, Mary Cecelia Keenan of Wilmington, N.C.; four brothers, four sisters, 21 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
