Robert Stewart was born on 16 Jan 1827 to William Stewart and Elizabeth Dorn in Johnstown, Fulton County, New York. He was baptized on 10 Aug 1828, according to the Records of the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown.

He married Catherine Reid on 13 Mar 1856 in Johnstown, where they had two children:
- Charles Stewart, born 13 Jan 1860 (married Emma Suits), raised by Robert's brother William D. Stewart and his wife Julia Ann Veghte in Johnstown.
- Archie Stewart, born 11 Oct 1861 (married Jennie Bamber), raised by Catherine's sister Margaret (Reid) Fraley and her 2nd husband John Fraley in Elphratah, Fulton County.

From at least 1870, Catherine lived at the Asylum for the Chronic Insane, Ovid, Seneca County, New York, per census records, where she died on 23 Mar 1915 (New York Death index).

After the birth of their 2nd son, Robert left to fight in the U.S. Civil War for nearly three years. We know Robert fought with the 115th New York Infantry because the notation "Soldier 115" was made on his entry in the 1865 New York census, which shows him living with his parents, several adult siblings and his son Charles in Johnstown after the war.

Sgt. Robert Stewart of Johnstown, New York, aged 35, mustered in as sergeant in Company E, 115th Infantry Regiment, on 15 Aug 1862 and mustered out, aged 35, on 17 June 1865, in Raleigh, N.C. The muster abstracts record him as born in Johnstown, New York, with the occupation of laborer, hazel eyes, black hair, light complexion, 5 ft. 11 in. (New York, Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts, ancestry.com).

A transcription error in "U.S., Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865" (ancestry.com) incorrectly notes Robert Stewart served in Co. D of the 115th New York Infantry. The actual image says he served in Co. E, as all other records say. Other documents also say Robert mustered out 17 June 1865, but he left earlier, as he is at home with his parents, siblings and infant son on the 1865 N.Y. census, enumerated 7 June 1865.

Robert spent his later years living and working as a carpenter in Schenectady, New York. The 1890 Veterans Schedules record Robert Stewart, formerly of the 115th Infantry, living on State Street, noting that he was wounded in the ankle. (There was only one Robert Stewart in the 115th Infantry.) Another Robert Stewart and family, wife Margaret, of a similar age, also a carpenter, lived in Schenectady (1880 census), but he died in 1894 (New York Death Index).

The 1900 and 1910 census records Robert, widower, carpenter, still living as a lodger on State Street (same street as on 1890 Veterans Schedules) in Schenectady. He also applied for an army pension from Schenectady. His wife Catherine was recorded as married on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census at the Willard Asylum in Ovid.

Robert appears to have gone back to his hometown in Johnstown, because the New York Death index notes him dying 23 July 1912 in Johnstown. His grave inscription, which records 22 July 1912, is on the back side of the William Stewart and Elizabeth Dorn family monolith headstone at Johnstown Cemetery, followed by the inscription for his wife Catherine. Between them is an inscription for a child named Jennie Stewart, born 28 Dec 1902, died 25 Jan 1903. This little Jennie is not Catherine's child, as she was born past her child-bearing years.

Certain family trees say Robert was married again, to a woman named Rosa M. (Maria) and had more children, but multiple U.S. and New York census records for that Robert's family clearly show he was a different man.
