Mrs. Phebe Beardsley was born in what is now the town of Morris, then the town of Butternuts, Nov. 15th, 1820, and died at the family residence near this village, Feb. 4, 1880. She was converted to God at an early age and united with the M. E. Church in 1859, and continued a faithful member of the church militant until she was transferred to the church triumphant which is without fault before the throne of God. As a Christian, her experience was deep and constant. Like an everflowing river was the joy of salvation to her soul. As long as her health permitted, she was seldom absent from her place in the sanctuary, while her clear, positive testimony to the power of divine grace often cheered and encouraged the hearts of God's people in the social meetings. As a wife and mother, she showed that devoted and self-sacrificing spirit which characterizes the true Christian, ever forgetful of self in her devotion to her family. As a neighbor, she won the friendship, love and esteem of all with whom she associated. Her pure, sympathetic heart was quickly touched at the sight of human suffering, hence her presence was always welcomed at the bedside of the sick and dying. But her ministrations of love on earth are ended, her tears have ceased to flow, for in Heaven's everlasting light her redeemed soul is safely and eternally crowned. She has already greeted the two precious little ones who reached the other shore in advance of her, and she is blissfully awaiting a happy reunion on the evergreen shore. While passing through the dark valley of the shadow of death, the question was asked, "How is it now?" "Oh," she replied; "it is all right; it is all right." Thus she passed triumphantly to the home of God, to the "House not made with hands, eternal to the Heavens." She leaves an aged companion who now looks anxiously for the time of the eternal re-union, and seven children who now for the first time realize what it is to be bereft of a mother's love.
