Obit: Artemus Branning: died suddenly from a heart attack, Sunday April 5, 1931, at 3:15 o'clock at the home of his niece, Mrs. John E. Sloan, Wallkill, NY. He was born at Branningville, now known as Atco, PA, Aug. 3, 1844, son of William and Eliza Beardsley Branning. Nearly all his life had been spent on the old homestead until he went to live with his niece. He was one of the old time raftsmen on the Delaware river. He acted as collector of Damascus township in 1890; also supervisor. Twenty-eight years ago he was elected sheriff of Wayne county. He was a charter member of Delaware Valley Grange, No. 1564, and was one of the oldest members of Delaware Lodge No. 561 F. & A.M., having joined in 1882. He was a member of the Ashland Baptist church. The remains were brought to Indian Orchard and sevices held in the Indian Orchard chapel, Wednesday, April 8, at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. R. D. Minch of the Damascus Baptist church officiating, assisted by Rev. J. R. Dirksen of Wallkill, NY. The following nieces and nephews survive: Grover A. Branning, Walter Coe Branning, Atco, PA; Mrs. J. E. Sloan, Wallkill, NY; Mrs. D.Y. Siesholts,Youngstown, Ohio; Wm. Hoolihan, Long Eddy, NY; Buckley Hoolihan, Clarence Hoolihan, Andes, NY; Lida Osbourne, California; Earl Lee, California, Allen F. Lee, Bremerton, WA; Mrs. Elizabeth Marsh, Binghamton, NY. The pall bearers were brother grangers; Masonic service used at the grave. The floral tributes and the large number present at the service showed the high esteem in which Mr. Branning was held by his acquaintances. Interment took place in family plot in Indian Orchard cemetery.
