Roy HINES was the son of George Reginald HINES (1893-1945) and Mary Hendry RICHMOND (ca1894-1966) of Bracebridge, Muskoka District, Ontario, Canada. Roy was also survived by one sister, Aileen Waddell née HINES MacIVER (1924-2005). He was predeceased by a half-sister, Rosemary Edith HINES (1918-1923), whose mother (Roy's father's first wife) had died in 1919. Roy's father, George, had joined the local militia in 1912 (age 18 or 19) and then served in the 20th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI. In late 1917, George married Rose Lillian LINKINS in Kent, England.

WWII RCAF SERVICE
WWII was already underway as Roy finished High School in his home town of Bracebridge. Shortly afterward, and following closely in his father's military footsteps, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, with RCAF Service Number J8417. [His service Number appears in several online internet records as 3417 or J3417 and is likely due to a transcription error in a single RCAF source document.

Roy was posted to No. 10 Service Flying Training School in Dauphin, Manitoba. He was a member of Course 35: August 8 - October 24, 1941 [ comprised of 21 known men- most with RCAF Service Numbers in the range "J/8397, Gordon Ross Truemner (AFC), thru J/8418, Harold Keith Stinson (DFC)" - Ref: rcafdauphin.blogspot.ca/2012_10_01_archive.html ], and received his "Wings" upon graduating there. After training as a pilot, he achieved the rank of Pilot Officer - "P.O.".

He was one of many RCAF pilots deployed to England to fly British-owned Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft.

At the time of his death, he had been a pilot for just over one year. He was (reportedly) attached to RAF Fighter Command, in 59 Operational Training Unit (OTU). The 59 OTU provided training for Hawker Hurricane pilots and was initially (Feb 1941) located at the RAF Crosby-on-Eden airbase in Cumberland County (now Cumbria), about 5.8 mi (9.3 km) north east of Carlisle, Cumbria and 3 mi (4.8 km) west of Brampton, Cumbria .

RAF Milfield, in Northumberland, was under construction during 1941 and early 1942. On 6 August 1942, 59 OTU was relocated to Milfield from Cumbria. It is possible that Roy HINES was involved in operational testing of the new RAF Milfield airbase before it was officially opened.

On 19 Jan, 1942, near noon, Roy was on a training flight in his Hawker Hurricane Mk1 fighter # V7385 over North Yorkshire England when he encountered bad weather. One report of the incident states: "At 12.15hrs the pilot was attempting a forced landing believed to have been near Nosterfield, the landing was a success but the pilot had not done his straps tight and struck his head on the instrument panel sustaining fatal injuries; he later died in hospital.... the Nosterfield location is confirmed through a North Riding police report giving a map reference." The name and location of the hospital continue to be unknown as of this writing (10 Feb 2014).
