MISS IRENE HICKS OF MINEOLA DIES
Member Of Old Long Island Family; Active In Local Groups
Miss Irene Hicks of 12 Fairfield Avenue, Mineola, member of an old Long Island Quaker family, died in Nassau Hospital, Mineola, [Nassau County, Long Island, New York] yesterday, after an illness of 11 weeks. She was 66 and in her 67th Year of life.
Born at Jericho, she was a daughter of James Knox Hicks [Sr.] and Martha Russell Hicks [First Wife]. She was one of 12 children who later moved to beyond Jericho. When the Long Island railroad was put through to the new community, the area was named Hicksville because much of the land was owned by members of the Hicks family.
She had lived at Mineola for more than 32 years and was known as "auntie" to all the children of the neighborhood. {Also, known to her family members as "Auntie Hicks or Auntie Irene".}
For many years, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian church of Mineola, the Women's Republican club of Mineola and the Daughters of Liberty of Hempstead.
Surviving are six brothers, Roy Hicks of Tula Vista, Cal. [Chula Vista]; [Thomas] Charles, Daniel L. [Lawrence], James K. [Knox], Harry [F.] and Norman Hicks, all of Hicksville; and five sisters, Mrs. Edna M. Mellen [Edna Browning Hicks Mellen] of Mineola, Mrs. Daisy [Martha Daisy Hicks] Voorhest [Mrs. Frank Voorhest] of East Norwich, Mrs. Edith [Hicks] Landa of Hicksville, Mrs. Anne [Ann Lawrence Hicks] O'Connor of Hagerstown, Md., and Mrs. Hannah [Hicks] Velsor of Hicksville. [Later, married Spiro].
