Esther was born in a remote log cabin near the mining town on Conquenella, Washington. She was supposed to be born December 25, 1909, but being obstinate as she was, she chose December 28 when it was 40 degrees below zero and a howling blizzard.
Esther was proud of her heritage. Her father was born in South Deer Creek, Douglas Co., Oregon, to Mary Jane (Gilmore) Barker and Jesse Nolan Barker. Her father was a freighter who liked to wander and they lived in many places from Washington to the Caribou Country in British Columbia, Canada.
On October 19, 1937, she married William H. Gray Sr. They lived in British Columbia many years before moving to Roseburg [Oregon].
Esther had a desire to try many things in her life; taxi driver, mail delivery person. She also ran a restaurant, was a placer miner and was as an accomplished painter who sold paintings in Carmel, California.
Esther loved to write. She wrote everyday in a journal and in 1992, she wrote a book, "My Early Years", then traveled to British Columbia to give a copy to her family members living there. She was a wonderful cook and always had a house full of family and friends. She had a wonderful spirit for adventure. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include; daughter, Jessie Schum and her husband, Bernie, of Roseburg; son, William H. (Duffy ) Gray, Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Roseburg; grandchildren, Robert Schum of Aloha, Oregon; Esther Hand and her husband, Doug, of Roseburg; Linda Steele and her husband, Brad, of Roseburg; Brent Gray of Roseburg; Todd Gray and his wife, Kimberly, of Salem, Oregon; great-grandchildren, Michael and Kelsey Hand.
Esther was preceded in death by; her husband, William H. (Harry) Gray, Sr.; her brother and her sister.
