JOHN THOMAS HOLLINS, SR.,(a/k/a) J.T., Big John or Popu, the son of the late Cleveland and Della Mae Hollins, was born on February 10, 1938 in Eufaula, Alabama. On Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at his home in Carteret, New Jersey after a lengthy illness he went to be with the Lord.

If asked to describe John in one word, that word would be 'LOVE". He was a "man after God's own heart." He really loved and cared for people. He was a great father and husband to his own family and a father figure to many children that called him "Dad" including his "son/nephew" David Sanders. There was never a time that family, friends, or church members would call on John for help and he wouldn't be there. He was the "grill master" at all cookouts but always remembered the homeless. John loved sports and was an avid golfer. No matter where he was if one was in his presence, he/she would hear him talk about whom God is and the love of Jesus. John had a great sense of humor and could always turn anything into a smile. All through his debilitating illness, John's faith in God never wavered. He looked forward to going home to be with the Lord. He said when we see him again; we all are going to say "MY LORD!!!"

John joined Calvary Gospel Church in the late '70's and faithfully served as a Deacon until his illness would not allow him to attend. He was forced to retire from Clinton Hill Community Gardens after many years of service due to his illness. He continued spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ from home to anyone who would listen.

He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife of 42 years, Mattie L. Hamme-Hollins, 2 sons; John T. Hollins, Jr.(Tricia) of San Antonio, Texas and Paul Hollins (Lisa) of Hillside, New Jersey; 5 grandchildren; Destiney M. Hollins of Laurel, Maryland, Paul Raekwon and David Hollins of Hillside, New Jersey; Samari and John T. Hollins, III of San Antonio, Texas; 2 sisters, Mary Anderson of Newark, New Jersey and Elizabeth Hollins of Brooklyn, New York; 1 brother, Paul Hollins of Eufaula, Alabama; and a host of sister and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters, including his twin sister.

Your weary hours, your days of pain, your sleepless nights are past; your ever patient, worn out frame has found sweet peace at last. In the arms of JESUS.

Today is Father's Day. We miss you so much. I pray for Paul because your death is so hard for him to accept. It is a little easier for John, Jr. since he is away. You would be so proud of David and young Paul. We are trying to move on by the Grace of G...(Read more)
