Milton Barton was born in 1928 in Ohio. While living in Maquon, Illinois, enlisted in the Union Army on September 13, 1862 in Illinois and mustered in on January 7, 1863. He served in Company A, 14th Regiment of the Illinois Calvary as a Saddler. He was discharged on May 21, 1865 with a disability.
The first two battalions of the 14th Illinois Cavalry were mustered into service at Peoria, Illinois, on January 7, 1863. The third battalion was mustered at Peoria on February 6, 1863.

The regiment was mustered out in Nashville, Tennessee on July 31, 1865.

The regiment suffered 2 officers and 23 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 190 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 215 fatalities.

Saddler: Each company of cavalry is allowed an enlisted man as saddler, whose duty it is to keep the horse-equipments of the company in repair, under the direction of the company commander and the saddler sergeant. The pay of saddler is fourteen dollars per month, the same as a corporal of cavalry, with the same allowance of clothing and rations. Military duty ordinarily is not required of either saddler sergeants or saddlers; but they should be instructed in a knowledge of the ordinary duties, and should at all times be available in case of necessity.
