My Great Grandmother.
Christina (Chrissy) parent's ( William Tell Stringer and Christianna W Branch) were both dead by the time she was about 8 years of age. Chrissy with her sister, Belle, went to live with her mother's cousin Mrs. Elizabeth Bowen and Capt Reuben Bowen outside of Thomasville, GA. Capt Bowen died on Feb 6, 1886.
Her Grandfather was John D Branch of Leon Co. Prior to the Civil War he owned 3 large plantations in Leon Co. This is not the GOV Branch, but a relative.
The Bowen's plantation was called Magnolia Springs Plantation (on what is now Singletary Rd) and burned while Chrissie was still young. By Grandma Chrissy's account the original plantation home was a beautiful home with a winding staircase to the second floor, columns out front, and a grand piano in the main room. Elizabeth Bowen, Chrissy and Belle moved into what had been the foreman's house on the plantation which is a large rambling home. Still in the possession of Paul Barwick.
Our Great Grandmother Chrissie was a very interesting woman. I remember how in the evenings she would let down her knee length hair and brush it. Often, my Great Grandfather would do it. She kept her hair this length until her 90s.
