Chester Alexander Bates was born Charlie (Rye) Ray Jr. July 16, 1895 in Marion Co., KS near Roxbury to Charlie (Rye) Ray and Katherine Hinther Ray. Katherine died after being mauled by a bull. Charlie Jr. lived with his widowed grandmother and Aunt Kathie Hinther until his grandmother was killed by a bull and his aunt was mauled so badly she spent the balance of her life in a wheel chair.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Bates adopted the baby and were the only parents he ever knew. Charlie Ray, Sr. was a nephew of Henry Ray, the stepfather of Perry Bates' father.
Chester was graduated from Pratt High School and The Chiropractic College of Wichita, Kansas and Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, Los Angels, California. He practiced his this trade in Trousdale and Lewis, Edwards County, Kansas where he was also the manager of the Gano Grain elevators.
Chester served as a Private in Headquarters Company 69th Infantry during WWI and was Honorably discharged at Camp Funston, Kansas January 25, 1919.
