Tom J. Collins, one of Morristown's favorite history buffs, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, at age 77, at Morris View Health Center, after a long illness. Tom was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Morris Plains, where he created an updated history of the church. He also worked extensively with United Way as a volunteer. Tom was born in Denver, Colorado on Memorial Day, May 30, 1931. He came east to New York to seek his fortune, after serving four years in the Navy during the Korean War. He would finally work for the New York Stock Exchange for over 20 years. Sometime after his retirement, he worked for nearly seven years with the wonderful folks at the Morris County Library. He thought of this as his second "career."
Tom leaves his beloved wife, Lois Elizabeth; his dear son, Scot and his wife Joan; and two grandchildren, Jordan and Katelyn of Morristown. He also leaves a nephew, Michael Collins; his sister-in-law, Carol Collins and her five children, Kevin, Stephen, David, Peter and Kerry, all of Denver, Colo. His brother, Dan and his sister, Lois both died previously. At the time of his death, Tom was living at The Highlands in Morris Plains.
There was a private funeral ceremony for the family at Hilltop Cemetery in Mendam on Friday, May 1, with the Rev. Stephen Cobb officiating.
